Northern Ontario Energy Credit

Helping Households Manage Energy Costs in Northern Communities

The Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC) is a provincial tax credit designed to help low- to moderate-income families and individuals offset the high cost of home heating and energy in Northern Ontario. If you live in Greater Sudbury or surrounding communities, you may already qualify — and you might not even know it.

At PTI Home Services, we’re proud to serve our Northern Ontario neighbours and support access to programs like this, which help residents stay warm and comfortable without breaking the bank.

💡 What Is the Northern Ontario Energy Credit?

The NOEC is part of the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, administered through the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB). It’s intended to help with:

  • Heating costs (electric, natural gas, propane, oil, etc.)

  • General energy-related expenses for homes in the North

👥 Who Qualifies?

You may be eligible for the credit if you:

  • Are 18 or older

  • Live in Northern Ontario (including Sudbury, Nickel Belt, Manitoulin, etc.)

  • Paid rent or property taxes on your primary residence in the past year

  • Had a qualifying income (low to moderate, based on your tax return)

You must apply through your personal income tax return — there’s no separate application.

🧾 How Much Is the Credit?

  • For the 2023 tax year, the NOEC provided up to:

    • $172 for individuals

    • $265 for families (including single parents)

The exact amount depends on income, family size, and how long you lived in Northern Ontario that year.

📌 Note: This is a tax credit, not a refund or cash rebate. It reduces what you owe or increases your tax return.

📅 When Will I Receive It?

If you're eligible, the NOEC is typically paid out monthly from July to June as part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit. You must file your tax return and indicate you're applying for the credit.

🏡 How PTI Can Help You Save Even More
